What is a whelping pen?
Prior to yesterday's surprise my answer would have been "What?!?!?" However through the enlightening experience of an unexpected canine pregnancy and subsequent dog birth seven times over I can now speak with some authority on the matter. A whelping pen is a place for the mother dog to raise her pups in safety. A proper whelping pen should keep the puppies from leaving but should allow the mother to come and go as she pleases. With this knowledge, a 10x12 ft tarp and a whole lot of pvc pipe and zip ties I set about crafting just such a place. The following pictures illustrate my mastery of the subject. Special thanks goes out to my good friend Dean who as you can see was very helpful in the process. You will also see what a "help" Katherine was during the whole process.

Puppy Roll Call Coming Tomorrow!
We will be showing individual pictures of each pup tomorrow along with their new names (I'm coming up with them so they will be AWESOME). While you wait enjoy some wriggling, wiggling, furry, puppy mass in this video clip.
Day 1, Friday Morning 5:40am
I get woken up to the sound of Zoti moving around in her crate followed shortly by the sound of yelping. My thought "It can't be". I get out of bed and use my iPod Touch to investigate. To my surprise I see a small black lump. "It can't be!" I go and shake Kath out of a blissful sleep and inform her in a stupefied voice "I think Zoti had a puppy". We turn on the light and lo and behold puppy number 1 has arrived.
Day -1, Thursday Evening
Katherine and I took Zoti to her obedience training class. Instructor sees Zoti and says "Geez, she looks VERY pregnant". Our thought "That's crazy talk". We got home and went to bed.
Day -2, Wednesday Evening
While watching Snatch with Katherine and a friend, Zoti was sitting next to me and I had my hand on her belly. All of a sudden I felt movement. I chalked it up to gas or a coming BM.
